Casement Windows — These windows are also referred to as “crank windows” because of the method that’s used to open them. They swing from a hinge (similar to what you would see on a door). The strong seal around these windows make them weathertight, but the swing function allows for a good amount of airflow if it’s needed.
Double-Hung or Single Hung Windows — These windows slide along a vertical track to open and are the most common. While both of these windows look similar, single-hung windows only open from the bottom half. Unlike casement windows (which swing outward), you don’t have to worry about double- or single-hung windows colliding with each other or with anything outside your home. They can provide good ventilation, offer easy access for cleaning, and are easier to replace than some of the more unique window designs.
Picture Windows — While they’re locked in place and can’t move, these windows won’t obstruct your view to the outside (which can give your home a real wow factor). But, they do have one drawback. These windows won’t give you any airflow. The upkeep will be simple because they have no opening mechanism, and they have a weathertight seal. The problem, however, is that picture windows aren’t very energy-efficient (at least compared to solid walls). The heat inside your home can escape during the winter months, while excess sunlight can overheat your interior space during the winter months.
Bay Windows — These windows are functional and have an interesting design, but the term “bay windows” refers to how they’re grouped together to extend from the house. On the inside, they can create a bay or shelf (while each window in the group meets at an angle). In a typical design, there’s a fixed picture window at the center while the two flanking windows can be casement, single-, or double-hung.
Sliding Windows — This is a common option for horizontal window orientations. They work similar to sliding glass doors, with one section sliding over the other. With hinges at the top, awning windows are paired above, below, or to the side of the picture window.
